FEWER AND LESS

Introduction

What is a 'Fewer and less'?

Definition: According to prescriptive grammar, "fewer" should be used with nouns for countable objects and concepts. According to this rule, "less" should be used only with a grammatically singular noun in other words Generally, fewer is used when the number of things is counted ("fewer problems") whereas less is used when the number is measured or uncountable ("less trouble" or "less time").

First of all look at the example given below in sheet 1
For a better understanding of this concept

Use ' fewer ' for objects that can be counted 3 books
Use ' less ' With nouns that are not countable, Water.

So all we have to read sentence & clearly observe to fill the blank choose either fewer or lesser and complete sentences to make complete sense.

Eg. Paul has ________ cards than Joel.

Here, a blank space to fill & complete the sentence.

In this particular worksheet, the children are asked to fill the blank choose either fewer or less, and complete sentences to make complete sense.

How will these worksheets help the young students ( who are probably only very young in age, and new to even basic English concepts)?

For eg. In the very first problem ( this was illustrated in the introduction, but will be repeated here for further clarity) in the questionnaire, the student is asked to fill the blank, choose either fewer or less, and complete sentences to make complete sense.

Paul has ________ cards than Joel

To fill the gap, We have chosen the word 'fewer' because here to count the card compare it & fill in the blank so the sentence is completed making complete sense.

It's obvious that like mentioned above in the introduction, that the student will learn to familiarise themselves with the basic concept of Fewer and Less.

Even though the second sheet which is provided looks similar to sheet 1, upon closer observation, the child will find that both pages are indeed not the same.

He/she also will notice that this is the 'answer key' in which all the solutions to the questionnaire are given for the child’s convenience.

Conclusion
