Alluvial deposits brought down by the Ganga while passing through its course after originating from the Himalayas, makes the region the most fertile land. The terrain here is also alleviated and dampens at places. Agriculture contributes the major share of the economy and the state is called the Rice bowl of India. The state is also a major milk-producing state. The 3 division of Uttar Pradesh can be, according to topographical regions:
- Siwalik ranges and Terai region.
- Gangetic plains the alluvial deposits.
- Vindhya Range has rich forests and various rivers.
The state is rich in historical and ancient things, and have seen various invasions, disruptions, attacks. It is the most populous state of India with an average of 828 people per square km². The population of the state is higher than the population of some of the entire country(for eg. Pakistan). Great saints like Bhardwaj, Gautam, Yagyavalkya, Vashishtha, Vishwamitra and Valmiki were from the area, which shows the intellectual capabilities of the state. The great battles and religious fights of dharma, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, have been inspired by Uttar Pradesh.
The religions like Jainism and Buddhism were believed to have originated in the state. The current religious composition of the state is Hindus 79.73%, Muslim 19.26%, Christian 0.18%, Sikh 0.32%, Buddhist 0.10, Jain 0.11%, Others 0.30%
The state has various and magnificent flora and fauna species. The state animal is Barasingha, and the state bird is Sarus Crane. The forest area of UP has tigers, leopards, wild boars, jungle cats, jackals, foxes, monitor lizards in abundance. Several varieties of mammals and reptiles can solely be found here. The Largest Wildlife Reserve of UP is Dudhwa National Park.
Some important rivers passing through and originating from the territory are Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Ram Ganga, Ghagra, Betwa, Ken.
Significant places and cities of historical importance are Piparhava, Kaushambi, Shravasti, Sarnath (Varanasi), Kushinagar, Chitrakoot, Lucknow, Agra, Jhansi, Meerut etc. one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal is the tourist spot and a synonym of love. It was created by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife. The city of Varanasi, Ayodhya, Braj has religious and cultural values. Many festivals, events, melas and fairs are organized in the state, around these cities.
