Chandigarh is a city, district, union territory and the capital of neighbouring states, Punjab and Haryana. The city is the dream of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Some 8000 years ago, the area was inhabited by the civilization of Harappa. After that, the territory was a part of Punjab province, which was wealthy enough. After the partition of 1947, Punjab was separated and two units were created out of the area, with the capital of the city Lahore going to the Pakistani territory. After that, the proposals and bills were passed to incorporate a new capital of the state, which in turn led to the creation of the Union territory.
