The state is often referred to as "Devabhumi", the land of gods due to abundant Hindu temples, deities and pilgrimage centres built across the state with one of the official languages as Sanskrit. The state was created by the carving from the adjoining state of Uttar Pradesh on 9 Nov 2000.
