The northeastern state of India, Meghalaya, was formed on 21st January 1972 when it was carved out of Assam. It is also called the "Abode of Clouds" due to its high rainfall and picturesque landscapes. The name "Meghalaya" is derived from the Sanskrit words Megha (cloud) and Alaya (abode). The state lies to the northeast of India between 25ยฐ1โฒN to 26ยฐ5โฒN latitude and 89ยฐ45โฒE to 92ยฐ47โฒE longitude, with varying altitudes that contribute to its unique climate and biodiversity. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and is also known as the โScotland of the East.โ
While flowing the natural course of the river; huge valleys are created, adding to the natural wonders of the state. One of these valleys is Umiam-Barapani, a very important and significant region for the development of electricity. Cherrapunji is the city and town receiving the highest amount of rainfall in the world. The area is almost rainy all time of the year.
