23rd February 2021, New Delhi: Internshala Trainings, the e-learning arm of Internshala, has brought out a report highlighting the major upskilling trends among engineering students. AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS were the top two popular core engineering trainings among Indian students in 2020 with 15k+ enrolments on the platform. Students also enrolled in STAAD Pro, Internet of Things (IoT), and Fusion 360 training to polish their skills, gain advanced practical knowledge, and increase their employability.
As per the report, 78% of all the enrolments were registered from male engineering students and 22% were female students hailing from civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, and other backgrounds. These core engineering trainings remained most popular among B.Tech, B.Tech (Hons.), and Integrated B.Tech students with 71% of the total enrolments. 27% of the enrolments were from Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) students and only 2% students from Master of Technology (M.Tech) learned these skills.
An interesting insight from the report is that 38% of the total enrolments were made by students after completing 3rd year of their UG programme. This is probably because students spend the first and second year of their undergraduation in understanding the general and branch specific subjects theoretically and solving assignments. They are expected to develop practical skills, work on minor projects, become job ready, and take up an internship or training during their third and final year, for which they prefer learning through short-term online trainings.
35% of the students enrolled in these core engineering trainings with the objective of securing an internship or job in future. 30% of students wanted to gain a new skill whereas 25% of the students enrolled to get a training certificate. 79.2% students that enrolled in AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, STAAD Pro, Internet of Things (IoT), or Fusion 360 training successfully completed their courses on or before time. This highlights learners’ dedication and involvement towards polishing and upgrading their hands-on skills through video-based training lectures, assignments, quizzes, tests, and industrial projects.
Interestingly, AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS skills were equally popular among employers hiring for remote and in-office engineering internships or jobs in 2020. 51% of the total engineering internships were posted for AutoCAD and 15% employers demanded SOLIDWORKS as a major skill. The average stipend for students equipped with these in-demand engineering skills was ?6,025 per month and the highest was ?45,000 per month on Internshala.
Highlighting engineering students’ inclination towards online trainings, Sarvesh Agrawal, the founder and CEO of Internshala Trainings said, “STEM students’ willingness to learn, innovate, explore, and upgrade their domain skills has always enticed them to online trainings. Students pursuing B.Tech or B.E have always been the top enrollers not only in core engineering trainings, but also in other skills like digital marketing, web development, programming with Python, and advanced excel. Witnessing learners’ interest that grew exponentially in online trainings during the pandemic, we have introduced more engineering trainings like Advanced SOLIDWORKS and Ansys on Internshala Trainings. We constantly update our training content, innovate with industrial projects, add more quizzes and assignments, and provide comprehensive expert support to students to help them polish their practical skills and prepare them for better career opportunities.”
