What is your Parenting Style

Description

Parenting style refers to the manner or practices which parents adopt in raising their children. It consists of a set of attitudes, feelings, behavior, and emotions expressed towards their children and their responsibilities. This can also refer to their level of expectations, attention towards adhering to rules, performance, and methods used for discipline and implanting values.

Types of parenting styles

  1. The Authoritarian style

This style resembles the military way of discipline, so it is also called the military style. In this, the parents put a strong emphasis on obedience and strict compliance to their set of rules for which the consequence of disobeying will result in punishment. The parents focus more on negative behaviors instead of positives and less on the opinions, wishes, and desires of their child. This can compel the child to be more aggressive, and rebellious toward their parents and cause insecurity in making their decisions in the future.
  2. The Permissive style

In this style, parents take on a lenient approach. They usually do not enforce rules, comply with their child’s wishes and demands and give them a free environment without forcing any type of control over them. They only come forward in the case, if there is any serious problem. This makes children more demanding and spoiled with no regard for authority or rules.

  3. The Authoritative Style

In this style, parents are loving, warm, and supportive to their children but they also have fixed limits or rules to protect them. They focus on the positive aspects and also explain the reasons behind the limits, their behavior, and the importance of following rules so that the child can understand it and will comply with their will. They listen to their child’s views but don’t always agree with them. This helps the child to be more responsible and to accept the consequences of their actions.

  4. Uninvolved Style

It is also called ‘Neglectful parenting’ and in this, parents are not responsive or are indifferent to their child’s needs and desires beyond their basic necessities. They show little or no love, guidance, and support towards their child. They also have no regard for following rules or setting limits. This may cause low self-esteem in them and can lead to depression and anxiety.
