Child safety at home

Description

Child safety at home: Proper precautions and care

The parents are often concerned about the matter of their child's safety. They often deem the house a safe place for their child but there can be many risks and harms involved inside the house, sometimes as much as outside the house. It would be best if the parents will be aware of the potential risks and hazards beforehand, and can take safety precautions and measures to protect and keep their child safe at home. They can also teach their child about such risks and what will be safe for them.

Baby furniture and equipment

There are many furniture and accessories at home, which can harm your child, the parents can ensure the safety by

  1. Get the furniture with solid, stable, and strong bases or wide legs to avoid tripping or falling over as much as possible.
  2. Securing the heavy furniture and TV to the wall by using furniture straps or L-brackets.
  3. Prevent putting heavy or seemingly attractive and fragile items such as glass decorations or remotes on the furniture, which can be easily accessed by the child.
  4. Keep the sharp furniture edges or corners covered by using corner cushions and guards to avoid any injury.
  5. Use safety locks and latches on cabinets, drawers, and doors to prevent the child from reaching dangerous or important things.
  6. Making a provision to limit access to stairs by installing safety gates so to prevent children from falling and injuring themselves.

Electricity safety

The parents can ensure the electrical safety at home by

  1. Keeping all the electrical cords unplugged and at a safe place, when not in use so that the child would not have access to exposed wires, leading to shock or wouldn’t trip over it.
  2. Teach the child on how to safely use the electrical appliances, like never sticking the fingers into the electrical outlets or never touching or using the appliances with wet hands.
  3. Replacing the electrical appliances and cords, if they are worn, or damaged.
  4. Babyproofing the appliances like toasters, ovens, and stoves by using locks and guards to prevent the child's exposure to potentially dangerous accidents.

Burn prevention and glass safety

The parents can ensure such safety by

  1. Keeping a close eye on the child and keeping them away from the fire, hot surfaces, and appliances like ovens, heaters stoves, etc.
  2. Ensuring the correct water temperature before bathing the child and keeping hot foods and drinks out of their reach.
  3. Use safety glass for the windows and stickers on the glass surface to highlight the danger to the child.
