The full form of UGC NET is University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. The UGC NET is conducted to select the aspirants for Assistant Professor or for both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor in the Colleges and Universities in India. UGC NET is conducted to determine candidatesโ eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professorship.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the NET exam till June 2018, on the behalf of the UGC. After that, in December 2018, the National Testing Agency (NTA) had started to organize the UGC NET exam.

- UGC NET Notification 2026 will be announced in 3rd week of April 2026 .
- For the 2026 exams, NTA continues to use strictly Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode with no negative marking for incorrect answers.

Eligibility
The Candidates have to fulfill certain eligibility conditions laid down by NTA. UGC NET Eligibility is based on the academic qualification and age limit as described below:
UGC NET 2026 Educational Qualification Requirement
- Candidates must have scored at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) in their Post Graduation or equivalent from any recognized university.
- Final year students are also eligible to appear in the exam. However, they will be considered for an award of JRF or professorship after they pass their qualifying exam with minimum marks.
- Ph.D. degree holders whose post-graduation exam was completed before September 19, 1991 (irrespective of the date of declaration of result) are provided with an additional relaxation of 5% in the minimum marks requirement.
UGC NET 2026 Age Limit
- Assistant Professorship: There is no age limit for UGC NET Assistant Professorship.
- Junior Research Fellowship: The upper age limit is 30 years as of Janurary 1, 2026.
However, age relaxation is provided to reserved category candidates as per the government of India norms to apply for NET JRF:

Applications
The starting date of UGC NET 2026 is 3rd week of April 2026. Candidates will be able to apply till September 05, 2026. The last date to submit the UGC NEt application fees is 3rd week of May 2026. Candidates are required to fill the UGC NET 2026 Application Form online mode only at the official website.
- Step 1: UGC NET Registration 2026 Visit the official website and click on Apply online to fill the registration page. Enter your personal details, email ID, and mobile number.
- Step 2: Filling UGC NET Application Form 2026 Post-registration, a system-generated application number will be sent on the email Id and mobile number. Login again and select your subject, position, and preferred exam center.
- Step 3: Uploading Scanned Images Now, upload your photograph and signature in the specified format.
- Step 4: Pay UGC NET Application Fee Make application fee payment either through debit card/ credit card/ net banking or Paytm The final step is to download the copies of the filled-in application form and e-receipt of fee payment for further reference.โ
Admit Card
Candidates have to download UGC NET 2026 Admit Card only from the official website by logging in with their registration number and date of birth. UGC NET 2026 Admit Card will specify the candidateโs name, roll number, category, photograph, signature, allotted exam date, time, and exam center.

- The admit card will be displayed on the screen.
- Download it and take a printout for further reference.
Exam Centers
- UGC NET Exam will be conducted in 224 cities this June.
- Candidates have to indicate 4 exam cities in order of their preference while filling UGC NET 2026 Application Form
- NTA will try to allot the most preferred exam center for the candidate.
- However, it reserves the right to allot any exam center other than the ones selected by the candidates.
- Also, it can add or cancel exams in any city if the number of applicants for that city is negligible.
- A city may have more than 1 exam center. The address of the allotted exam center will be mentioned on UGC NET admit card.
- Candidates have to carry their admit card, one passport-size photo, and an original photo ID proof with its photocopy.
Exam Pattern
UGC NET Exam is a computer-based test having multiple-choice questions. The exam has two papers โ Paper 1 and Paper 2.โ Paper 1 is mandatory for every candidate. On the other hand, the subject of UGC NET Paper 2 should be chosen at the time of the application process.

Syllabus
NTA has updated UGC NET Syllabus 2026 for Paper 1 and all NET subjects under Paper 2.
- UGC NET Paper 1 Syllabus tests teaching and reasoning ability, research aptitude, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness of the candidate.
- UGC NET Paper 2 Syllabus is based on the subject chosen by the candidate. It tests the candidateโs in-depth knowledge and expertise in the respective subject. NTA UGC NET is conducted for a total of 81 subjects.
Selection Process
- Candidates qualifying for the entrance test of UGC NET 2026, will be selected in the subject-wise and category-wise merit list published online. The top 6% of total students who have appeared for both the papers in the test will be considered qualified in the entrance test.
- Admission into various Indian Universities or Institutions for the position of Assistant professor or JRF will be offered on the basis of cut-off score secured as per their categories. The top 15% of candidates from each category and subject will be selected and declared eligible for Assistant Professor Position only.
Result
The UGC NET result for the Last week of July 2026 is expected to be released in the month of july 2026. Candidates can download the result from the official website by logging in with their registration number and date of birth. It is declared in the form of a scorecard containing marks obtained in both papers for JRF and LS.
