About Central University of Punjab - CUP

The Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (Punjab) has been established through the Central Universities Act 2009 which received the assent of the President of India on 20th March 2009. Its territorial jurisdiction extends to the whole State of Punjab. It started its functioning from Camp Office in April, 2009 and from November 2009 it shifted to its City Campus spread over an area of 35 acres at Ghudda Village on the Bathinda–Badal road. The main campus is coming up on 500 acres of land near Bathinda. The buildings of the university are still under construction and these will be GRIHA IV compliant. It’s designs would be having maximum utilization of the sun energy. The existing traditional trees of Van and Jand would be preserved, primarily because of the Van tree being the motif for the logo of the university. The famous old tree Van (Salvadora oleoides), remains evergreen even in harsh conditions, providing shelter to livestock and the inhabitants, becoming a source of happiness and symbol of ‘Tree of Knowledge’. The open book below represents the scholarship spreading message of light leading to knowledge and wisdom. The university has started M.Phil.–Ph.D. Integrated Programmes in the areas of Bioscience, Comparative Literature, Environmental Sciences and South & Central Asian Studies. Study of one course in science would be compulsory for those opting for humanities/social sciences and similarly one course of humanities/social sciences would be compulsory for those joining the science/technology stream. The University is following semester system with 100% internal evaluation and continuous assessment. The University would be following grade point system. A credit transfer mechanism with the other universities would be introduced for the benefit of the students. The students would be able to see their evaluated answer sheets and they would also be participating in the teacher assessment programs.

Location - City campus is located on Mansa Road, Bathinda, Punjab (30.1754 N; 74.9371 E).

Driving directions from the city centre:

From railway station, take Mall Road to reach Sri Hanuman Chowk. Take Goniana Road to Fouji Chowk and get into Mansa Road. Cross the railway flyover and proceed towards Mansa. CUP City campus is located immediately after the next railway crossing (Delhi wala fatak).

Facilities

Residential Facility - At transit Faculty Hostel semi-furnished accommodation is available to faculty and staff. The students of the first batch have been accommodated at the transit facility at the City Campus. For students, hostel is being located within the well protected walled campus.

Library - The Central University of Punjab has set up a well-equipped air conditioned library. University has purchased 5000 books, and is subscribing to 37 International Journals and 12 National Journals. It is also subscribing to scientific bibliographical databases like Science Direct and Scopus for online access to other 238 e-journals. Through INFLIBNET, University library accesses to almost 4000 e-journals.

Laboratories - The University is providing well equipped science/research laboratories to its students. The basic instruments like Quartz Double Distillation Units, BOD Incubators, Ovens, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Micro-centrifuge, Refrigerators, Deep Freezers, Spectrophotometers, Light Microscopes are available in these labs. The computer laboratory, apart from providing facilities for training in computer applications, caters to the academic needs of faculty, staff and students. It has fast internet connectivity allowing users to access Science Direct and other online journals. The University has also installed a Blade Server with capacity for 16 blades. The present number of populated blades is four, each with 16 GB RAM.

Banking - Banking facilities at the City Campus are provided by the State Bank of Patiala, which is also providing ATM facility.

Internet – The University has installed two lease lines of 10 mbps each for fast and continuous internet facility. University is in the process of installing another one Gbps lease line through BSNL under the scheme of NMEICT.

Medical Facilities - The University will establish a fully-equipped health centre to provide OPD, indoor, emergency, referral, laboratory and other services to its employees and students.

Reading Room - Fully air conditioned reading hall facility for the students is available.

Transport Facilities - The University has purchased 32 seated Swaraj Mazda Bus for the convenience of faculty and students.

Sports – Facilities for table tennis, carom and chess have already been installed. Squash and other sports facilities will be provided shortly at the campus. Gymnasium and swimming pool facilities are being added to the infrastructure very shortly.

Mess - A mess-cum-canteen facility has been created in an air cooled hall. It also meets the general day to day needs of a general store items.    

Seminar Hall - Air-conditioned seminar hall having a capacity of 100 chairs.

Fellowships and Contingency Grants - The University is providing fellowships and contingency grants to all the students who are not in receipt of fellowship or any other assistance from any other source as per the details given below:  

Contingency    

Power Supply - The University has got installed two 5KW Solar-Wind Energy Hybrid Systems with 75% subsidy from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The systems will ensure uninterrupted power supply for tube lights, fans and computers.
