History:
When the capital of India was shifted to Delhi, Lady Hardinge (1868-1914), the wife of the then viceroy of Viceroy Charles Hardinge, was the first to take initiative for starting a medical college for women, as the lack of separate medical college for women made it impossible for Indian women to study medicine. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Hardinge, on 17 March 1914, and to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary in 1911-12, it was named 'Queen Mary College & Hospital'.Lady Hardinge was actively involved in collecting funds from the institution of princely states and public, unfortunately she died on July 11, 1914.
The college was eventually inaugurated on 7 February 1916 by Viceroy Charles Hardinge. On the suggestion of Queen Mary, the college and the hospital was named after Lady Hardinge to perpetuate the memory of its founder. The college started under the able leadership of Dr. Kate Platt, who was the first Principal of the college. In its first year, 16 students were enrolled for the seven-year course. In 1960, the course duration was reduced to five years, and today it 150 graduate admissions. The college became affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1950 and post-graduate courses were started in 1954.
