The Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan (currently functional) at IIT Kanpur, forms a part of the league along with eight new IITs proposed by the MHRD, Government of India. Indian Institute of Technology - Rajasthan is one of the new IITs started by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, and has successfully completed its first academic year, 2008-09. The Rajasthan state government and MHRD have approved Jodhpur as the city where IIT Rajasthan will be set up.  The IIT site would be sprawling about 700 acres of land between Karwad and Jhipasni villages. The construction of the fully residential campus of IIT Rajasthan is expected start in the later part of 2010. Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur has been assigned the job of incubating the new IIT Rajasthan (GOI, MHRD Order No. F.No. 11-10/2008-TS. I (Pt.) dated May 9, 2008). At present, IIT Rajasthan offers a 4-year B. Tech. programme in three branches viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with an intake of 40 students per branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus, fee structure and other rules will broadly be the same as in the mentor IIT, i.e. IIT Kanpur. Students admitted will eventually be relocated to the place in Rajasthan where the new IIT will be established and have to give an undertaking to this effect.

Temporary Location - IIT Kanpur is situated on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road at Kalyanpur about 17 km away from Kanpur Central Railway Station.

Transportation - Kanpur is well connected by rail from all parts of India.

1. The nearest well-connected airport is the Amausi Airport at Lucknow (95 Kms from the Campus). Institute buses ply from the Railway Station and LIC building to the IIT Campus at the times mentioned in the bus schedule.
2. If you happen to reach at a time when there is no Institute bus at the Railway Station, you can reach Bada-Chauraha or LIC by a cycle rickshaw after coming out at the City side of the railway station (i.e. towards Platform No. 9). The rickshaw will cost you about Rs. 10.
3. Shared three-wheeler taxis (tempos) ply between Bada-Chauraha and IIT Gate. The fare is about Rs. 8 per head. You may also hire a full tempo or a taxi from the Railway Station to IIT Campus. The fare is around Rs. 100 for the tempo and around Rs. 150 for a taxi, depending on the time of the day.
4. Night charges are usually higher. From the IIT Gate you may take a cycle rickshaw to the Dormitory (about 2 km). It should cost you about Rs 6.

Proposed Location  - IIT Rajasthan will be located about 22 Kms from Jodhpur city on National Highway 65 which connects Jodhpur to Nagaur.

Important Information - There are certain Do's and Dont's when arriving at IIT Kanpur. Some of these are:

• You are not supposed to bring any laptops / personal computers, digital cameras / handycams or any other articles of value.
• IIT Rajasthan does not allow students to keep any motorized vehicles like mopeds, scooters or motorcycles.
• You will have to make your own arrangements for stay in Kanpur.
• Warm clothing and a blanket/quilt are required by the month of November. These can be brought from your homes during the mid-semester recess They can also be purchased from the Shopping Centre.
• The Institute does not require a uniform. However, you are required to wear formals for the Orientation Programme.
• A note of caution due to the close proximity in which students live in dormitories, chances of catching infections are high. So you are advised to get yourself vaccinated against communicable diseases like hepatitis-B, chicken pox, measles, typhoid etc.
• Students need to open a bank account in either the State Bank of India or Union Bank of India, both of which have their branches on the campus.
• If you are undergoing any medical treatment, please bring the relevant papers.
• Bring at least 8 passport size photographs (this includes photographs required for the bank account), along with the receipts of all the cash payments made at the time of JEE counselling. Bring your Class X and XII certificates in original, as well as attested photocopies. Also please bring proof of parental income and caste certificates in original, if applicable.

Facilities

CPA - During the first two semesters students have to go through a CPA (Compulsory Physical Activities) program.

MCM Scholarships - IIT Rajasthan offers Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships to students who qualify on the basis of their financial need (parents’ income less than Rs. 2,00,000/= per annum) and maintain a good academic record. Application forms for the scholarship will be available during the registration.

Academic Counselling - The Help Desk, IIT Rajasthan, monitors the academic performance of those students who are not able to meet academic requirements. These students are provided additional assistance as and when they ask for it.

Emotional Counselling - The Help Desk assists students in sorting out their problems, whether of a personal or emotional nature, or related to adjustment in a new environment. The Help Desk will arrange professional counselling and personalized psychiatric care, if necessary. Confidentiality of students is strictly maintained. Shopping Centre - Commodities of general use, including SIM cards and bicycles, are easily available in the Shopping Centre (Shop C) in Kanpur.
