The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is amongst the top institutes in the country. In the twilight years of the 19th century, it is conceived as a 'Research Institute' or 'University of Research' by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. Established in 1948 with the purpose of providing quality education and research to students and it is counted as the fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and research in India.
At the time of its inception it has only two departments: General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology but now as the institute has grown, some other departments were also established to extend the pattern of knowledge. It has departments of different fields ranging from Biochemistry to Aerospace Engineering which have served to nucleate research and development in both the public and private sectors.
