IIMC was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry.
IIM Calcutta has a sprawling 135-acre campus, with seven lakes and verdant greenery providing an idyllic backdrop conducive for the country's top notch talent in academia, industry, and research.
The pedagogy of the institute includes lectures, cases, simulations, field surveys and team assignments. It has a very influential alumni network of 9000 PGP alumni.
A leader in long duration executive education, it offers a portfolio of 18 programs of varying duration ranging from 6 months to a year. Each year close to about 4000 participants attend these programs.

Since 2002, Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri is the Director of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.
There are about 94 full-time faculty members in IIM Calcutta, out of which 92% are PhDs/Fellows in Management.
At present, first year batch at IIM Calcutta has a strength of about 462 students.
So, we can safely say that the student-faculty ratio at IIMC is about 4.9:1.
Past and present faculties at IIM Calcutta include many prominent scholars such as Historians Barun De and RajatKanta Ray, Economists Paul Samuelson and Deepak Nayyar, and Statistician Rahul Mukerjee, JagdishSheth, and Warren Bennis. Ashok Mitra, who taught as a professor at IIM-C later became the Finance Minister of the state of West Bengal.

Numbers of PPO+PPI, Laterals and Final offers: At the end of the placement session, 356 students had bagged plum jobs - 108 offers in Slot Zero, 95 pre-placement offers (made to students by companies they have interned with) and 130 lateral placement offers (for those with work experience). Number of international placements: There were a total of 43 International job offers in locations like Hong Kong, Dallas, Lugano, Germany, Dubai, London, Singapore etc.
Salary Statistics i.e. Minimum, Average and Maximum amounts: The highest international offer stood at Rs. 60 lpa whereas the highest domestic salary was Rs. 40 lpa. The Slot 0 finance firms compensation generally comprised of a fixed component ranging from INR 30-40 Lakhs for Indian locations and INR 40-60 Lakhs for foreign locations; and a bonus component ranging from 100% to 200%. Slot 0 consulting firms offered around INR 20-25 Lakhs as base package plus bonus component for Indian locations. Slot 0 marketing companies offered in the range INR 15-20 Lakhs for India offices.
Exclusive/coveted/First-time recruiters: Zurich Financial Services, a major financial services group, recruited exclusively from IIM Calcutta (first time from any B-school in Asia) for its Zurich and New York offices. Exclusive offerscame from Microsoft for its Redmond head office and Plinga, a German gaming company.
Largest recruiter on campus: Microsoft has made the largest number of offers to students at IIM-C. The company recruited nine people during laterals placement process, across three different profiles- Microsoft IT, India Development Centre (IDC) and Microsoft Finance.
Number of participating companies: Altogether 83 companies had visited for the Final placement. The number of companies participating in Lateral placements has risen to 54 this year, compared to 47 last year.
Other facts: Although the placements were set to happen over five days (February 20 to February 24), the entire batch got placed by 4th day evening, in an unprecedented development.

Even in these tough economic conditions, IIM Calcutta re-affirms its status as the Finance Campus of the country with Finance contributing the largest number of offers (28.53%). Also, Consulting companies made a significant portion of the pie with 26.80% of the offers. This was closely followed by Sales and Marketing (22.48%) and General Management (8.93%).
