About Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University
Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) is a public university set up by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on May 8, 2000. It was bifurcated into separate universities: Gautam Buddha Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University from May 1, 2010. This was done to reduce the workload and to ensure proper management during the BSP regime of Mayawati government then. But in 2013 the change of government combined Gautam Buddha Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University on January 5, 2013. Though the bifurcated universities still retain their names and the presence of their websites shows that it maybe still in process of combining as of July 2014. According to the university's website, it is the biggest technical university in Asia.
UPTU is affiliating in nature and its jurisdiction spans the state of Uttar Pradesh. The total number of affiliated colleges was 49 in the year 2000 which has now gone up to 238 and the University is still growing. Because of its gigantic size and number of colleges affiliated to it and geographic dispersion, it has been sub-divided into five zones with 150-160 colleges in each zone for the ease of management and facilitating inter-zonal comparison and possible internal competition to enhance quality of teaching-learning processes. UPTU also has a NOIDA Centre and Regional office to facilitate closer academic and industrial interaction around that zone where a prominent cluster of private affiliated colleges exists. Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow better known as the "Engineering College" in Lucknow, is a constituent institute of the university. The university has two campuses, one at Meerut and other in Noida.
