Graffiti reading 'Free Umar Khalid' and 'Long Live Naxalbari' appeared on the walls of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi on Saturday, triggering a fresh controversy on campus. The development came a day after controversial slogans reading 'Free Kashmir' and 'Free Sharjeel Imam' were spotted on the walls of Jamia Millia Islamia.
The JNU administration has taken note of the matter and is looking into it, an official said. The university will not allow vested interests to disturb peace on campus, the official added. JNU sources said such graffiti would not be tolerated.
The graffiti drew objections from the JNU unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which accused Left-wing student groups of attempting to disrupt the academic environment on campus.
In a statement, the ABVP alleged that pictures circulating from the campus showed members of the All India Students' Association (AISA) involved in objectionable writing alongside a portrait of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar. It also objected to political slogans being written on university walls and demanded that the administration identify those responsible and take action.
ABVP's JNU president Mayank Panchal said freedom of expression could not be used to justify disrespect towards national figures or damage to public property. JNU unit secretary Praveen Piyush said the university did not belong to any one ideology and that the dignity of its academic environment must be protected.
Umar Khalid, a former JNU research scholar, has been in jail since September 2020 in connection with the larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 Delhi riots. He has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the case relates to violence that left 53 people dead in the national capital.
Khalid's continued incarceration has remained a point of contention, with student groups and civil rights activists repeatedly raising concerns over the prolonged delay in the trial.
The JNU incident came amid a controversy at Jamia Millia Islamia, where slogans reading 'Free Kashmir' and 'Free Sharjeel Imam', demanding the release of jailed activist Sharjeel Imam were found written on campus walls. The slogans were spotted amid protests by students demanding the restoration of the students' union, which has been disbanded since 2006.
Imam, another JNU scholar, was arrested in 2020 over inflammatory speeches during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). A case was filed against him under sedition and other charges after a speech at Aligarh Muslim University in which he called for blocking the roads connecting the Northeast with the rest of India.
The graffiti triggered a political row, with the BJP questioning the presence of Congress MP Imran Masood at the students' protest. The Jamia administration condemned the slogans, describing them as detrimental to the country's integrity and sovereignty.
