Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi has shifted all classes online with immediate effect after students protesting for the restoration of campus union elections clashed with security guards on Saturday.
Chaos erupted on the campus when security guards, who had been monitoring the protest, moved to remove tents set up by the protesting students. A video of the incident showed students and security guards engaged in a scuffle, with some protesters attempting to pull their fellow mates and security guards away and pacify the situation.
Since October 12, the student protesters have been demanding the reintroduction of elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU). The union was disbanded in 2006 following incidents of campus violence that led to academic disruptions.
The ongoing protest has also been caught up in a controversy over posters and slogans that appeared on the campus, including those calling for the release of Sharjeel Imam, a JNU PhD scholar who has been jailed in connection with the anti-CAA protests and is facing anti-terror charges.
Posters bearing slogans such as 'Free Kashmir', 'RSS go back' and 'Free Sharjeel Imam' have added to the controversy.
On Friday night, Congress MP Imran Masood was briefly detained by Delhi Police after visiting Jamia to express solidarity with the protesting students. Masood distanced himself from the controversial posters and said he did not support the slogans. He also questioned the action taken against the students and called for their reinstatement.
"Those who want to break this movement should understand that Kashmir is an integral part of India. We would even give our lives to keep Kashmir as an integral part of India," Masood told India Today TV's sister channel, Aaj Tak.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised Opposition leaders over their silence on the controversial slogans, questioning Rahul Gandhi, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. He asked whether those behind the slogans wanted to see India "broken apart once again" and called for them to be exposed.
In a notice issued on Saturday, the university's Office of the Registrar said all courses would be conducted online until further notice, citing the prevailing situation and the need to ensure the safety and security of students on campus.
The university described the move as a precautionary measure, stressing that academic activities would continue without disruption despite the change in the mode of teaching. The notice was issued by Registrar Professor Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi.
All deans, heads of departments, directors, faculty members and students have been directed to follow the online class schedule and ensure regular participation.
The order applies to all courses, rather than being limited to a particular department or programme. However, the notice does not specify a date for the resumption of physical classes.
Faculty members have been instructed to make the necessary arrangements to conduct classes through online platforms and provide students with the academic support and learning materials required to continue their studies.
The university has not specified when physical classes will resume. Further updates and instructions regarding the arrangement will be communicated through its official channels.
Students should therefore follow the online schedule and any instructions issued by their respective departments regarding class links, learning resources and participation.
Reacting to the protests and the row over the controversial slogans, Union Minister Giriraj Singh questioned the "silence" of Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav.
"I want to know why there has been no statement yet from Rahul Gandhi, the AAP, Akhilesh Yadav, or Uddhav Thackeray on this matter. Who are these people, and what is their intent โ do they wish to see India broken apart once again?" Singh said.
"At Jamia, slogans like 'Free Kashmir' and messages in support of Sharjeel Imam were written on the walls. What kind of mindset does this reflect? It is now time for the people of this country, all true patriots, to consider how to deliver a befitting reply to such individuals. Those responsible for these actions must be exposed," he added.
