Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, which is also known as TNPSC is responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examinations for the state of Tamil Nadu for entry-level appointments for recruitment for various posts of civil services of the state. These kinds of services are included in Group-1 and Group-2 categories of the Tamil Nadu Civil Services exam. The TNPSC is a state organization for Tamil Nadu that not only conducts civil services examinations but also advises on the framing of recruitment rules. The TNPSC conducts the State Civil Services examination in three stages for selecting prospective candidates- Prelims exam, Mains, and Personality test which is also known as Personal Interview.

The TNPSC stands for Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. The process for selection into each subsequent stage depends upon an applicantโ€™s performance in the previous stage. Only those aspirants who after passing each stage, qualify for the TNPSC Civil services personality test, and are then considered for recruitment in the State civil services.

TNPSC Eligibility Criteria

Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission is responsible for regulating the eligibility criteria, along with conducting the exam. Given below is the eligibility criterion for applying to TNPSC civil services exam:

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • Candidates must be Bachelorโ€™s Degree holders in any field ranging from B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc., etc., from any University incorporated by an Act of the Central or a State Legislature in India or an Educational Institution established by an Act of Parliament or deemed to be a University.
  • The minimum age limit for TNPSC is 21 years, while the maximum age limit is 36 years (should not have completed as of 01 Janurary 2026). However, for all the posts the minimum age is 18 years, but it is different for the following posts:
    • The minimum age limit for the post of Sub Registrar Grade-II is 20 years.
    • For a Probation Officer in the Prison Department, it is 22 years.
  • For the post of Probation Officer in the Social Defence Department, the minimum age limit is 26 years.TNPSC Applicants who are applying for the posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Category I) and District Officer (Fire and Rescue Services) must possess the following Physical Qualifications:
    • Height: not less than 165 cms for males and not less than 155 cms for females.
    • Chest: Not less than 86 cms (Expansion-5 cms) for the post of DSP (Category-I) and not less than 89 cms (Expansion-5 cms) for the post of DO (Fire and Rescue services).

Important Note: These physical qualifications need to be certified by a medical practitioner who should not be below the rank of an Assistant Surgeon.

TNPSC Application Process

The application process for the TNPSC Civil services prelims exam starts with filling the online application form from the official website of TNPSC itself. After the results for the Prelims exams are announced, applicants become eligible to apply for appearing in the Mains exam. The process includes submitting a hard copy of the online application, along with photocopies of other documents on or before the stipulated deadline.

To apply for the TNPSC exam through online mode, follow the following steps:

  • Applicants should visit the official website from here http://www.tnpsc.gov.in The first step is to complete a One-time registration process through the website.
  • The User ID and Password generated can be used to log into the account.
  • Using your credentials, sign in to your account and click on the โ€˜Applyโ€™ option from the homepage.
  • The next step is to fill in the requisite details, asked on the page, and select the name of the post/posts you are willing to apply for.
  • Thereafter, upload your official photograph along with the signature.
  • The last step is to submit the application form and save it for later use.

TNPSC 2026 Exam Main Exam Pattern

The TNPSC Mains exam is a subjective type exam and comprises two compulsory papers as mentioned below. The mode of exam is offline (paper-based). The total marks for Paper I are 100 and for Paper II, it is 300.

NOTE: Please note that PAPER- II has to be answered completely in either Tamil or English. Also, the marks secured in Paper-I will not be considered for selection of the post, only the scores secured in Paper-II alone will be considered for selection.

TNPSC Civil Service Exam Personality Test (Interview)

The applicants, who qualify for the prelims exam, as well as the mains examination, are selected for the interview. The applicant is judged on the basis of his mental capabilities, clear and logical exposition, critical powers of assimilation, etc. This test carries 40 marks. Mains exam and personal interview together make a total of 340 marks. The minimum qualifying marks for the mains exam and the interview is 102 out of 340.

The final list of recommended applicants for the TNPSC Civil services exam is based on the total marks obtained in the Mains exam and the personal interview scores obtained in the prelims exam are not counted.

TNPSC Civil Service Exam Preliminary Result

The result for each stage of the exam is declared separately. The applicants who qualify for the prelims exam can only become eligible for appearing in the Mains examination. TNPSC announces the result of civil services exams online on the official website. The final merit of the applicant is determined by the aspirantโ€™s performance in the mains examination and the personal interview test, and not on the basis of prelims marks.

TNPSC Selection Process

After the announcement of the result of the TNPSC Main exam, the qualified applicants need to appear for yet another round, namely a Personal Interview. This test is the final stage in the whole process of selecting applicants suitable for the Tamil Nadu civil services. For the selection of an applicant, the combined scores of all the tests would be considered.
