The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 are out, and India's highest-ranked institution is IIT Delhi at 66th place. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, follows at 79th, while IIT Bombay takes the third spot among Indian institutions at 83rd.
At the top of the Asian rankings, the University of Hong Kong retains first place, followed by China's Peking University at second and Tsinghua University at third. No Indian institution has made it to Asia's top 10.
The latest edition features 1,722 universities across 26 higher education systems, including 195 new entrants. While India remains the region's second-most represented system with 325 universities, Mainland China is well ahead with 448 institutions, adding 53 universities to its tally.

IIT Delhi continues to lead India's representation, but its 66th position places it well outside Asia's top 50. IISc and IIT Bombay follow, with four other IITs making the top six Indian institutions.
Chandigarh University is another notable name in the list, securing the seventh position among Indian institutions and 104th in Asia.
India's overall representation has expanded, with 21 Indian universities now featuring in Asia's top 200, compared with 20 in the previous edition. However, a larger presence does not automatically translate into stronger positions at the top.
The University of Hong Kong has retained its position at the top for another year. China's Peking University remains second, while Tsinghua University has made a major jump from ninth to third.

The biggest regional trend is China's expanding presence in higher education. Mainland China has three universities in Asia's top 10: Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University.
Hong Kong, however, has the strongest representation in the top 10, with five institutions. Singapore accounts for two, while no Indian university features in the top 20.
China also has the largest number of ranked universities, with 448 institutions, an increase of 53 from the previous edition. India follows with 325, while Japan has 153.
The rankings also point to a changing competitive landscape for Singapore. NUS has fallen from third to sixth, while NTU has slipped from joint third to eighth.
For India, the results present two contrasting pictures: a growing university presence across Asia and a continuing challenge to break into the region's highest-ranked group.
