Jamia Millia Islamia University has extended online classes until November 24 and shifted all odd-semester end-semester examinations online amid continuing tensions on campus. The university said the decision was taken to ensure the safety and security of students after a meeting of deans, department heads, directors and senior officials on Wednesday.
According to an office order dated October 28, online teaching for the odd semester will end on November 24. Practical, fieldwork, project and viva examinations will be conducted online from November 25 to 30, while theory examinations will take place from December 1 to 24.
The university will observe winter vacation from December 25 to January 12, with even-semester classes scheduled to begin on January 13, 2027. The order does not specify when physical classes will resume, leaving the continuation of online teaching subject to the campus situation.
The decision comes amid a student agitation that began on October 12, with protesters demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) and a clear timeline for elections. The union was dissolved in 2006, and elections have not been held since.
The protests intensified after students launched an indefinite hunger strike. Tensions escalated further on October 24 following a confrontation between protesters and security personnel, prompting the university to shift classes online amid concerns over student safety.
The administration has said student union elections will be held within 15 days of approval of the union's constitution. It has also agreed to revoke suspension and show-cause notices issued to students during the agitation and promised an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel.
However, protesters have rejected the arrangement, arguing that the administration has not announced a definite deadline for approving the constitution or holding elections. They have also opposed the shift to online classes and restrictions on access to campus facilities.
The dispute has drawn political attention, with student groups alleging a crackdown by the university administration and Delhi Police. The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has claimed that police imposed prohibitory orders, barricaded campus gates and detained students in and around the university. These allegations have been made by the student organisation.

Amid the continuing agitation, teachers at Jamia have accused political actors and outsiders of attempting to escalate the dispute and disrupt academic activities.
In a statement issued through the university, they defended the administration's steps towards restoring the students' union, including the proposed election timeline and the formation of a committee to draft its constitution.
The teachers said the committee, constituted on October 21, should be given adequate time to examine relevant court orders, the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations and university rules before finalising the constitution.
They also expressed concern over the alleged entry of political leaders onto the campus without prior permission. According to the university's statement, an FIR was lodged on October 25 over the alleged unauthorised entry of Congress MPs Imran Pratapgarhi and Imran Masood. The allegations are part of the ongoing dispute and have not been independently established here.
The teachers urged outsiders to refrain from actions that could disturb the campus atmosphere, while protesters continued to demand a firm election schedule and the restoration of the union.
