Biharโs Education Department has directed teachers and non-teaching employees in government schools to attend work in formal attire, prohibiting jeans and T-shirts. The order is to be implemented strictly across the state, with District Education Officers (DEOs) asked to ensure compliance.
The directive was issued by Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) C K Anil soon after he took charge of the department. Letters informing district education officers of the instructions were issued on Friday, October 30, according to reports.
Under the instructions, teachers and school staff must follow a formal dress code while on duty. Casual clothing, including jeans and T-shirts, will not be permitted on school premises during working hours. Officials have been asked to enforce the rules and take action in cases of non-compliance.
The department has stressed the need to maintain decorum and a dignified atmosphere in schools and other educational institutions. Teachers and staff have been asked to uphold standards of conduct and ensure that school premises remain conducive to learning.
The order further warns against organising DJ, disco or other activities considered inappropriate within school campuses. Any such event could invite strict action, the department has indicated. The restrictions are intended to prevent activities that may disrupt the academic environment.
However, the instructions do not amount to a blanket ban on music or cultural learning. Traditional music education and the use of musical instruments can continue, while programmes linked to occasions listed in the academic calendar are to be conducted in a disciplined manner, according to the reported details.
The directive follows earlier dress-code measures in Biharโs Education Department and comes amid a renewed administrative focus on discipline in government schools. State-wide implementation will depend on DEOs and school authorities ensuring that staff follow the instructions.
