Bharuch, Gujarat: Global Fast fashion contributes millions of tonnes of textile waste every year. Annika Mehta, a 17-year old student from Mumbai has chosen Bharuch, a town she and her family have a long-standing association with, to prove that meaningful change to counter this increasing environmental problem can begin with something as simple as an old pair of jeans. Through her project Threads of Change, Annika has spearheaded a powerful movement combining environmental conservation, local cultural preservation and women’s empowerment.
The idea behind the project is simple yet impactful. Two years ago, Annika began collecting denim and other discarded clothing from houses as donations. Not wanting them to end up in landfills, she worked closely with local artisan women in Bharuch to recycle and upscale them into beautiful handcrafted products including layered blankets or Dohars and reusable bags.
What is really great about the project is that it keeps local craftsmanship alive. Annika, who has also completed an internship on maintenance of local Indian crafts, spent time learning about traditional Sujhni weaving technique passed down from generations of women artisans in Bharuch which were incorporated into making the Dohars and bags. It is commendable how instead of using machines, she chose to support women making products by hand. In doing so, she has showcased our local craftsmanship while creating products that appeal to today’s environmentally conscious consumers.
Additionally, the social impact of the initiative has been very impressive. Money earned from the sale of Dohars and bags is channeled back to support the livelihood and economic activities of the local female artisans involved in the project.
Many artisans now feel Threads of Change is more than a way to earn a living. It has given them recognition, respect and renewed confidence in the value of their skills. As one community artisan commented, “ yeh sirf rojgaar nahi, balki samman hai” (this is not just livelihood, but self-respect).
It is heartening to see that Annika’s work has been noticed.

The Municipal Corporation of Bharuch has recognized the project Threads of Change for protecting local culture and the environment. The project has inspired us to think differently about waste and community development.
In fact, through this project, Annika Mehta, who has emerged as a local changemaker, has shown how leadership is not defined by age but by purpose. Her initiative has proven how something simple - a new weave, a new thread - can help weave a stronger, cleaner and more inclusive future for all.
