The Himachal Pradesh government is working to improve the quality of medical education, with a focus on modern technology and artificial intelligence, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Tuesday, according to news agency Press Trust of India.
The government is also considering an increase in the internship stipend for MBBS students and will make the required budgetary provisions for the proposed hike, Sukhu said during an interaction with students at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur.
Responding to a student's question about plans to develop the college into a leading medical institution, the chief minister outlined the work under way.
Asked about measures to improve safety and infrastructure, Sukhu said a modern amphitheatre, an auditorium and a library were being constructed. Separate hostels for 300 male and 300 female students were also being built, PTI reported.
He said the college's layout plan had been prepared with the help of a Japanese company. The government also plans to establish a super-speciality block, a cancer hospital, a dental college and a nursing college at the institution. Research activities will also be encouraged.
Sukhu said the selection of 10 postgraduate and 10 MBBS students from each medical college in the state was nearly complete. The selected students will soon be sent abroad to study best practices in medicine.
The planned measures include better infrastructure at the Hamirpur medical college, greater use of modern technology and artificial intelligence, support for research and overseas exposure for selected medical students.
