About
Every year, the UPSC conducts the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) to shortlist candidates for medical officer posts. On average, more than three lakh candidates register for the examination. The selection of the candidates will be made through an online written examination, which consists of two papers. Each paper will be of two hours duration carrying a maximum of 250 marks.

Eligibility
Nationality:
A candidate must be either;
- (a) a citizen of India, or
- (b) a subject of Nepal, or
- (c) a subject of Bhutan, or
- (d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
- (e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govt. of India
Educational Qualification:
- For admission to the exam, a candidate should have passed the written and practical parts of the final MBBS Examination.
- A candidate who has appeared or has yet to appear at the final MBBS exam may also apply. Such candidates will be admitted to the exam, if otherwise eligible but the admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation if they do not produce proof of having passed the written and practical part of the final MBBS Exam along with the detailed application which will be required to be submitted to the Commission by the candidates who qualify on the result of the written examination.
- A candidate who has yet to complete the compulsory rotating internship is educationally eligible for admission to the examination but on selection, he/she will be appointed only after he/she has completed the compulsory rotating internship.
Age Limit:
- A candidate for this examination must not have attained the age of 32 years as of August 1, 2024, i.e. the candidate must have been born not earlier than August 2, 1989. The upper age limit is Relaxable; Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to an SC/ST; Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to OBC who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
- Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1990; Upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof; Upto a maximum of five years in the case of Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on August 1, 2024, and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st August 2024) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (II) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service.
- Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years Military Service as of August 1, 2024, and whose assignment has been extended beyond 5 years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on 3 months’ notice on selection from the date of receipt of the offer of appointment;
- Upto a maximum of ten years in the case of (a) blindness and low vision, (b) deaf and hard of hearing, (c) autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness (e) multiple disabilities from amongst person under clauses (a) to (d) of section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 including deaf-blindness The ad hoc Doctors appointed after October 1, 1984, in the Ministry of Railways will be granted relaxation in age to the extent of the period of service rendered by them as ad-hoc Doctors in Railways.
Applications
CMS application started with the release of official notification.
The last date to fill the CMS application 2024 online was July 27.
The candidates need to submit the appropriate application fee as prescribed for their category.
After one week from the last date of application, the UPSC activates the application withdrawal window. The dates for the UPSC CMS 2024 application withdrawal were from Aug 3 to 9, 2024.
Admit Card
UPSC CMS admit card for the computer-based written exam is issued three weeks before the exam. The candidates can download the admit card for CMS written exam from the official website. The admit card for the personality test is issued separately.
Exam Pattern
The UPSC CMS exam consists of two stages. The first stage is the computer-based exam and the second stage is the personality test.

Selection Process
After the successful submission of the application, UPSC scrutinises the applications and the selection process starts.
- Step 1: The UPSC will issue CMS admit cards for the computer-based exam to all the candidates who had successfully filled the application form.
- Step 2: The UPSC will conduct the CMS written exam on November 21, 2024.
- Step 3: The candidate who clears the stage I written exam will be called for the personality test.
- Step 4: The UPSC will declare the CMS final results a few days after the personality tests.
Results
The conducting body declares the result for Combined Medical Services Examination through an online procedure. Candidates have to check the result only on the official website through the following steps:

- Candidates get redirected to a page containing all the results for various recruitment posted by the corporation.
- Check for the UPSC CMS Result 2024 and click it.
- A pdf file gets open,
- Type Ctrl+F and check your roll number if it is there or not.

Q. Can a BDS student apply for UPSC CMS?
A.No, the BDS passed candidates are not eligible to appear in the UPSC CMS exam. The education qualification required to fill the CMS application is an MBBS degree. Even there is no mention of MBBS or equivalent degree.
Q. What is the age limit for UPSC CMS Exam?
A. There is no lower age limit for this exam and the upper age limit is 32 years. The upper age limit is relaxed for the reserved category candidates and the candidates from Jammu and Kashmir.
Q. What is the mode of the UPSC CMS written exam?
A. The UPSC CMS exam is a two-stage exam. The first stage exam is the Computer-based test (CBT). The CBT is conducted at the designated centres of UPSC and the answer key is released by UPSC after the final result of the CMS exam.

A. Yes, there is negative marking in the UPSC CMS written exam. The quantum of negative marking is one by three(1/3).
Q. How many candidates fill the UPSC CMS application form?
A. As per the official UPSC report, 39166 candidates had filled the UPSC CMS application form and only 18183 appeared in the written exam in 2017.
Q. What is the selection ratio in the UPSC CMS exam?
A. The UPSC CMS exam has a good passing percentage when compared to other competitive exams. In 2017, 18183 candidates appeared in the written exam and 637 candidates were recommended for appointment. The selection ratio is 3 %.

A. Yes, as per the directive of Union Government, 10 % of the total vacancies are reserved for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) of the society.
