Anne Carson never seemed particularly interested in literary boundaries. Poetry could become an essay. An ancient Greek myth could become a contemporary love story. Scholarship could sit beside fiction.
Now, that restless approach has earned the Canadian writer the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.
At exactly 4:30 pm on October 8, the Swedish Academy announced Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature."
Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson studied ancient Greek and went on to earn a PhD in classics from the University of Toronto. She has worked as a poet, essayist, translator and scholar, drawing heavily on the literature and mythology of ancient Greece.
One of Carson's best-known works is Autobiography of Red, a 1998 novel in verse inspired by the ancient Greek story of Geryon, a red-winged monster killed by Herakles.
Carson transformed that myth into the story of Geryon as a sensitive teenage boy whose relationship with Herakles becomes an intense coming-of-age tale. The book became one of the clearest examples of how Carson could take ancient material and make it feel startlingly contemporary.
She has also translated works including Electra and fragments of Sappho, bringing her classical scholarship directly into her creative writing.
Carson entered the 2026 Nobel race as one of its strongest names. Ladbrokes placed her level with Can Xue at 10/1, while other markets also put her near the top.
A Nobel for Carson would recognise not just poetry, but a body of work that has spent decades asking what happens when literature refuses to respect the walls between genres.
