Jamia Millia Islamia university on Monday announced the resumption of student union elections after nearly 20 years, following sustained protests by students demanding the restoration of an elected representative body on campus. However, protesting students have rejected the universityโs notice, saying it does not provide a definite timeline for the election process or address their demand for the Proctor's resignation.
In an order issued today, the university administration said the elections would be held 15 days after the approval of the studentsโ union constitution. โThe Jamia Millia Islamia Studentsโ Union Election will be held after 15 days, from the date of approval of the constitution of the Studentsโ Union of Jamia Millia Islamia,โ the order stated.
The university's students' union was dissolved in 2006. Protesters have been demanding its restoration to ensure elected representation for students on campus.
Jamia Registrar Mahatab Alam Rizvi arrived at around 4:30 am on Monday to hold talks with the protesting students. He shared the administration's order and urged them to call off their agitation, saying their demands had been addressed.
The students rejected the notice, arguing that it did not provide sufficient clarity on the election process. While the order says elections will follow within 15 days of the constitution's approval, it does not specify when that approval will be granted.
Students also objected to the omission of their demand for the Proctor's resignation, saying the order did not address all the issues that had prompted the agitation.
The students said their agitation was aimed at securing democratic rights and meaningful student representation on campus, rather than accepting what they described as vague assurances.
While the university's order signals a possible return to student union elections after nearly two decades, the lack of a specific timeline for approving the constitution remains a key point of contention.
The students have vowed to continue their protest until their demands are addressed more clearly by the university administration.
