For years, the question for an Indian student planning to study abroad was often, โWhich university has the best ranking?โ
That question is changing.
Today, students are increasingly asking something more practical: Where will this degree take me?
A new Transnational Education Report 2026 by upGrad suggests that Indian students are becoming more focused on jobs, career growth and return on investment when choosing where to study abroad. Germany has emerged as the biggest beneficiary among upGrad Study Abroad learners, accounting for 51% of enrolments between January 2025 and June 2026.
The report, based on 53,800 aspirants counselled during the period, found that 49% cited better job opportunities as their primary reason for studying abroad.
That puts career outcomes ahead of other traditional considerations such as quality of education, permanent residency and lifestyle.
Praneet Singh, Vice President, University Partnerships, upGrad Study Abroad, said the landscape is seeing a โsignificant shiftโ, with students increasingly prioritising โcareer outcomes, democratised modalities and immediate ROIโ.
This is also changing which countries attract attention.
While the US, UK, Canada and Australia remain important destinations, rising costs and tighter immigration policies are pushing students to explore European countries such as Germany, France, Spain and Finland.
Germany's appeal in the report is closely linked to the value students see in its education and career pathways.
For students trying to control overseas education costs while still looking for strong employment opportunities, the country has become a prominent option in upGrad's data.
The affordability question is particularly important. Seven in 10 aspirants said they plan to study abroad with a total education budget below Rs 30 lakh.
The profile of these students is also changing. Nearly 60% come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, while 65.8% are freshers. More than 73% are interested in pursuing a master's degree abroad.
This suggests that study abroad is no longer being considered only by students from India's biggest cities or by those looking for the most prestigious university name.
The shift towards jobs is also influencing course choices.
Demand for STEM education grew 18% year-on-year in upGrad's data, while half of its Pathways portfolio now consists of AI-integrated or AI-first programmes.
That matters because students are increasingly looking at whether a course can help them build skills relevant to the changing workplace, rather than simply adding an international qualification to their CV.
Singh said Europe's growing appeal reflects students' search for destinations that combine โquality education with strong workforce-integration opportunitiesโ.
The report therefore points to a broader change in India's study-abroad market: the destination is becoming part of a career strategy, not just an education choice.
For students, the question may no longer be simply: Where can I get the best degree? It is increasingly becoming: Where can I turn that degree into a career?
