Ankona Datta, a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Sciences at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), has been awarded the James Hoeschele AsBIC Award. The award is given for her contributions to biological inorganic chemistry.
The award, according to TIFR, recognises outstanding mid-career researchers in biological inorganic chemistry across the Asia-Pacific region. Datta has been honoured for her research advancing molecular imaging and metal ion sensing through the strategic application of biomimetic and coordination chemistry.
According to TIFR, Dattaโs work exemplifies research excellence in the field, pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding and developing innovative approaches to studying molecular systems. Her research combines principles of chemistry inspired by biological processes with coordination chemistry, which examines how metal ions interact with molecules, to advance techniques for molecular imaging and sensing.
Molecular imaging enables scientists to visualise and investigate biological processes at the molecular level, while metal ion sensing helps detect and study metal ions that play important roles in biological systems. These areas of research are significant for improving the understanding of complex biological processes and developing new tools for scientific investigation.
Datta will be formally honoured at the 12th Asia-Pacific Conference on Bioinorganic Chemistry (AsBIC). It is scheduled to take place in Jaipur. She will also deliver an award lecture at the conference.
The James Hoeschele AsBIC Award highlights the contributions of emerging leaders in biological inorganic chemistry and acknowledges research that advances the field across the Asia-Pacific region. Dattaโs recognition brings attention to the work being undertaken at TIFR in the interdisciplinary area connecting chemistry and biology.
