After 20 hours of protest at Jamia Millia Islamia, the university administrationโs call to end the agitation and the studentsโ signatures on the agreement paper failed to bring an end to the standoff. The police have now imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside the university campus to prohibit unlawful gatherings and assemblies, police officials said. Several student organisations, including the Left-wing All India Studentsโ Association (AISA), had called for a fresh protest at the gates of Jamia at 3 pm.
The situation at Jamia Millia Islamia turned tense after the fresh protest call, with a heavy deployment of central police forces seen outside the university gates.
Barricades were placed around the gates, carrying notices warning about the enforcement of Section 163 of the BNSS. No other information about the restrictions was mentioned on the banners.
The development came after students protesting at the university rejected the terms of an agreement issued by the administration on October 26. India Today has accessed the document, which outlines the administrationโs position on the studentsโ demands.
The main point of contention remains the restoration of the studentsโ union.
By the end of Monday, the university decided to conduct the second mid-term semester examinations online. Online classes have also been extended till November 8.
The administrationโs October 26 order stated that elections would be held 15 days after the approval of the studentsโ union constitution. It also said suspension and show-cause notices would be revoked and a committee would be formed to investigate the actions of security personnel during the protest.
However, students on hunger strike rejected all three points of the order.
They said the document did not give a firm commitment on their key demands and insisted that the protest would continue until the administration addressed them.
The situation on campus remained tense as students continued their protest. Large numbers of women students came to the forefront of the agitation. Some climbed iron gates, which were around 10โ12 feet high, while resisting attempts by police personnel to bring them down.
Students banged on the gates while raising slogans and marched in groups. Protesters also moved between gates and tried to force them open.
During the confrontation, the Ibn-e-Sina gate broke, while protesters pulled out a grill at Gate No. 7.
Security personnel recorded the protesters as drones hovered over the campus gates. The administration also welded a gate after reports of students entering the campus through different gates over the weekend.
More than 30 students were reportedly detained.
The university administration has not publicly responded to the studentsโ renewed rejection of its October 26 order.
