Australiaโs latest student visa changes have put the focus on documentation, financial preparedness and careful planning for Indian students aspiring to study abroad. With new biometric requirements taking effect from October 26, 2026, students and parents need to stay updated on official immigration instructions and understand the rules applicable to their applications.
According to Ankit Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Unstop, โAustraliaโs latest student visa changes have made it more important for Indian students and parents to think carefully before committing to an overseas education. Getting into a good university is one part of the decision, but families also need to consider the cost, the course they are choosing and what they can realistically expect after graduation.โ
Aggarwal said students lodging new Australian visa applications in India from October 26 may be asked to provide fingerprints and a facial image. Applicants should follow instructions from immigration authorities, while those who applied before the date are not affected by this requirement, according to his statement.
Another change concerns switching universities.
According to Aggarwal, since October 2, most international students face a 12-month restriction on changing education providers, compared with six months earlier, subject to certain exceptions. Students should therefore research their course and institution carefully before enrolling.
โParents also need to look at the full cost, not just the tuition fee. Rent, food, insurance and currency fluctuations can put additional pressure on the family budget,โ Aggarwal said. He also cautioned students against assuming an Australian degree automatically guarantees employment or permanent residency.
Financial planning should go hand in hand with career preparation. According to Unstopโs Talent Report 2026, 85 per cent of engineering students, 84 per cent of undergraduate students and 74 per cent of B-school students in the graduating cohort remained unplaced at the time of the survey.
Saurabh Arora, founder and CEO of University Living, advised students and parents to approach the changes with preparation rather than apprehension. He outlined five areas families should prioritise:
โAffordable accommodation matters, but it should never come at the cost of a student's safety and well-being,โ Arora said.
For Indian students and parents, the immediate priority is to verify visa requirements through official channels, assess the full cost of studying and living abroad, and evaluate courses against realistic career goals. Careful preparation can help families navigate changing requirements without relying on assumptions or promises of guaranteed outcomes.
