One of the oldest technical institutions in India was established in 1847. It was awarded the status of the first technical University of free India. Since its inception it is gaining reputation nationally as well as internationally & became a center of excellence for producing some of the best engineers in the world. In 2001, it was declared as an institution of national importance. It aims at to be the fountainhead of new ideas and innovations in science and technology & continue to be a source of pride for all Indians. IIT Roorkee is one of the biggest technical institutions in the country having the largest number of academic units.
