Established in 1875 as the Brigham Young Academy, the school is privately owned and operated by the Church Education System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today the university enrolls approximately 30,000 students and employs 4,100 full-time faculty, administrative, and staff personnel. Part-time employees include approximately 1,450 faculty and staff and 13,000 students.
Known for its academically minded and internationally experienced student body, its world-class teaching and its beautiful mountain location, BYU is also recognized for its extensive language programs, talented performing arts ensembles and outstanding sports programs. Today, under the leadership of President Cecil O. Samuelson, the university remains dedicated to the integration of academic excellence.
