Medical interns and postgraduate medical students in Uttarakhand and Bihar will receive higher stipends after both state governments approved increases, offering financial relief during medical training.
The Uttarakhand Cabinet has raised the monthly stipend for MBBS interns in government medical colleges from Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The increase gives MBBS interns Rs 8,000 more every month. The revised stipend will apply to interns in Uttarakhandโs five government medical colleges.
These colleges are located in Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar and Almora. They offer MBBS and postgraduate medical courses.

Bihar has announced a separate increase for postgraduate medical students, with revised payments effective from January 1, 2026.
First-year PG medical students will now receive Rs 92,800 per month, up from Rs 82,000. For second-year students, the stipend has increased from Rs 90,200 to Rs 1,02,000.
Third-year PG students will get Rs 1,12,200 a month, compared with Rs 99,220 earlier. This means final-year students will receive Rs 12,980 more every month.
The Bihar Health Department announced the decision on September 11. Health Minister Nishant Kumar said the increase would provide better financial support to PG students and encourage quality human resources in medical education.
The two decisions cover different stages of medical education but have a common impact: students and doctors-in-training will have greater financial support while working in clinical settings.
PG students in Bihar play an active role in patient treatment and hospital services under senior doctors. MBBS interns in Uttarakhand also work as part of their practical training.
The hikes come amid wider concerns over differences in medical stipends across states. Recent protests by interns in several states have highlighted low stipends, long working hours and financial pressures during training.
For medical students, the Uttarakhand and Bihar announcements increase monthly support at two important stages of the journey from medical education to professional practice.
