IIT Madras Professor Balaraman Ravindran has placed before Indiaโs students a curious proposition for an age of machines: the road to the countryโs artificial-intelligence future may begin with an examination paper.
At a time when the worldโs great laboratories are engaged in a remarkable contest to teach machines to reason, speak and create, Ravindran has urged young Indians not to remain mere spectators - or consumers - of the coming technological age.
For those wishing to enter the field, he describes GATE as an โentry cardโ to participate in the AI revolution, particularly the relatively new GATE Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper.
Ravindran, who heads the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT Madras, has argued that students aspiring to work in AI, whether in research or at the masterโs level, should look closely at GATE DA.
โIndia should not only be consumers of AI, but also producers of AI and have significant control over the direction in which AI is evolving,โ he said.
The DA paper, introduced in recent years amid the rapid expansion of AI education, offers a route towards postgraduate study and research in the discipline. At IIT Madras, GATE DA qualification is among the requirements for admission to its M.Tech programme in Data Science and AI.
Yet, in Ravindranโs telling, the examination is scarcely the destination. It is the gate itself.
Behind his counsel lies a larger technological question. AI systems fashioned upon datasets and experiences from other parts of the world may not always understand the peculiar linguistic, cultural and social circumstances of India.
At IIT Madras, researchers have been examining how frontier AI models perform upon Indian data and applications. Ravindran points to a difficulty that is at once scientific and national: solutions developed elsewhere may not necessarily scale, either technically or economically, to a country of Indiaโs vast population and extraordinary diversity.
โYou need a lot of fundamental research to support the development of such solutions,โ he has said.

The work, therefore, extends beyond commercial AI. It reaches into education, healthcare, agriculture and other fields where India requires solutions capable of serving populations on an uncommon scale.
Indiaโs AI ambitions have consequently assumed a significance far greater than the fortunes of any single examination. The country is building computing capacity, datasets, research programmes and indigenous AI capabilities as it seeks a more substantial place in the global AI order.
For the student preparing for GATE, Ravindranโs message is thus of a different character.
โDon't think of it as an exercise that you need to go through when you graduate,โ he said. โThink of it as your key to participating in the AI revolution and helping shape not just the future of AI, but also the future of Indian society.โ
And so the old examination acquires a new meaning. The gate may be GATE; beyond it lies the larger question of who shall build the machines upon which tomorrowโs India depends.
