The University of Delhi (DU) will expand its residential facilities by constructing new hostels and redeveloping existing ones at an estimated cost of 5,889 crore. The initiative will provide accommodation for a total of 21,895 students.
The proposal was approved at the university's 1,284th Executive Council (EC) meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh.
During the meeting, Singh said the hostel designs had been prepared keeping 21st-century requirements in mind. He added that while circumstances were different when the existing hostels were built, future needs would continue to evolve. The construction plan is therefore being developed to meet requirements over the next 100 years.
According to the approved proposal, new hostels will be constructed at an estimated cost of 4,027 crore, providing accommodation for 15,758 students.
Meanwhile, approximately 1,862 crore will be spent on redeveloping two existing hostels, creating accommodation for 6,137 students.
Clarifying the redevelopment plans, the Vice-Chancellor said the names of existing hostels would not be changed. The EC has also approved proposals for the redevelopment of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men's Hostel within the university.
To ensure optimal utilisation of available land, additional multi-storey hostel buildings will be constructed at the Dhaka Complex, the East Campus in Surajmal Vihar, and the Najafgarh Campus.
Separate hostels for male and female students are also planned at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura and the university's West Campus in Dwarka.
The hostel blocks will be designed to utilise the maximum Floor Area Ratio (FAR) permitted on the respective campuses. The proposed facilities will include dining halls, shops, common rooms, reading rooms and residences for wardens to cater to students' needs.
The Executive Council has called upon all Delhi University colleges to prepare proposals for constructing new hostels on their premises and submit them to funding agencies.
Through this initiative, the university aims to expand residential facilities for students while ensuring the efficient utilisation of available campus resources.
