A protest was held outside a coaching institute in Jaipur on Sunday evening after a teacher was accused of assaulting a student inside a classroom. The incident, which took place on October 2 at the Jaipur centre of Kalam Academy, has caused concern among students and brought renewed attention to the question of safety within coaching institutions.
According to a report by the PTI, a news agency, teacher Praveen Dan Charan allegedly slapped and kicked a student during a classroom session. A video of the incident later came to light and was widely circulated, prompting a large number of students to assemble outside the coaching centre and demand action.
The students sought strict measures against the teacher and raised concerns about the safety and dignity of pupils within the institute. The protest grew in number as the evening advanced, following which police personnel reached the place and dispersed the gathering.
The student who was allegedly assaulted also spoke against the incident and expressed the hope that no other student would suffer a similar experience. He said that he intended to lodge a police complaint regarding the matter.
The coaching institute, meanwhile, took disciplinary action against the teacher. Kalam Academy condemned the alleged conduct and stated that the act was personal in nature and did not represent the institution. The institute said that the teacher had been removed from service with immediate effect after the matter came to its notice.
The affair has stirred discussion over the conduct expected of teachers and the responsibility of coaching institutions towards their students. Coaching centres in the country receive large numbers of young people preparing for competitive and entrance examinations. Such students often spend long hours in classrooms under considerable academic pressure, making discipline and a safe learning environment matters of particular importance.
The incident also illustrates the influence of video recordings in bringing such disputes before the public. What might once have remained within the walls of a classroom has, through a recording, become a matter of public concern and protest.
While the institute has removed the teacher, further developments may follow if the student proceeds with his proposed police complaint. The matter now rests, in part, with the authorities to examine the allegations and determine whether any further action is warranted.

The protest, however, has already made one demand plain: students expect the classroom to remain a place of learning, discipline and safety, and not one in which physical force is employed against them.
