National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called IIT Roorkee graduates the โluckiest generationโ while addressing the instituteโs convocation on September 19. He also recalled a difficult phase in his early career and shared a lesson from a Tibetan colleague that, he said, changed his perspective on setbacks.
Speaking at IIT Roorkeeโs 25th convocation, Doval told students that they were entering the professional world at a time when opportunities were expanding rapidly. He urged them to make the most of their education while remaining prepared for uncertainty and change.
Doval also went back to an early phase of his career when he felt that things were not going as he had expected.
Recalling the experience, he said he was โvery sadโ and โvery downโ despite having progressed well in his career. It was during this period that an old Tibetan Sherpa colleague working with him in the Intelligence Bureau noticed that he was unhappy.
The colleague asked Doval what had happened and why he was so upset. His response, Doval recalled, was unexpected: โYe sab map-reading ka chakkar hai.โ
Doval said the remark stayed with him because it offered a different way of looking at difficult situations.
Explaining the lesson to the graduating students, he said life is essentially a question of map-reading. People can find themselves in very different situations depending on whether they are able to understand the map correctly.
The story became a larger message about dealing with setbacks. Doval suggested that a difficult phase does not necessarily mean that a person has taken the wrong path. What matters is being able to understand the situation, reassess the direction and decide what to do next.
Doval also described the graduating students as the โluckiest generationโ, pointing to the opportunities available to young people today.
His address focused on the need to use those opportunities while remaining adaptable. Rather than expecting a career to follow a fixed path, he encouraged students to understand changing circumstances and respond to them at the right time.
The first day of IIT Roorkeeโs two-day convocation saw degrees being awarded to 1,277 undergraduate students from programmes including BArch, BTech, Integrated MTech, Integrated MSc, IDD, BS-MS and BS.
Of these graduates, 1,001 were male and 276 were female students.
Across the two-day ceremony, IIT Roorkee is scheduled to confer 2,701 degrees, the highest number at a single convocation in the instituteโs history, according to the institute.
The BS-MS degree is also being awarded for the first time under IIT Roorkeeโs five-year Dual Degree Programme.
Doval attended the ceremony as the chief guest, while General N S Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, was the guest of honour.
The second day of the convocation will focus on postgraduate and PhD students.
For the graduating batch, Dovalโs personal anecdote offered a simple way of looking at professional uncertainty: when circumstances change, understanding the situation correctly can be as important as knowing where one wants to go.
