For many UPSC aspirants, preparing for years without clearing the examination can mean putting their careers and finances on hold. Bhikan Jagan Rojekar, however, believes that pursuing the civil services dream should not mean giving up on other career options.
The Maharashtra native secured All India Rank (AIR) 812 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2025 on his fifth attempt, after four unsuccessful ones. Speaking to the BBC, Rojekar explained how his academic choices helped him keep an alternative career path open while preparing for one of India's most competitive examinations.
His experience offers a practical lesson for aspirants: persistence matters, but so does having a Plan B.
Rojekar comes from Jalgaon Sapkal village in Maharashtra's Bhokardan taluka. His parents worked as farm labourers before returning to their native village, where they cultivated two acres of land. His mother also worked as a daily-wage labourer to support the family.
Despite financial constraints, Rojekar continued his education. He studied in a Marathi-medium school until Class 10, pursued Science in Classes 11 and 12, and later completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture at Vivekanand College in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

His brothers encouraged him to choose a degree that could help him find employment if his competitive examination plans did not work out. Agriculture became that backup option.
Rojekar began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination full-time in 2021 and moved to Delhi in 2022. A Maharashtra government scholarship in 2023 helped him enrol in coaching classes.
His journey included other examination milestones, too. He appeared for the Civil Services Main examination in 2024 and 2025, cleared the Indian Forest Service Main examination in 2025 and reached the interview stage of the Central Armed Police Forces Assistant Commandant examination.
His eventual success in the Civil Services Examination came on his fifth attempt.
Rojekar recommends studying the syllabus thoroughly, analysing at least 10 years of previous question papers and taking mock tests. He also stresses the need to practise structured answers supported by relevant facts and data, particularly for the Main examination.
He advises candidates to prepare their optional subjects carefully and strengthen their language skills for essay writing.
The larger lesson from his journey is that aspirants should build a strong academic foundation and consider alternative careers rather than allowing one result to determine their entire future.
For Rojekar, an Agriculture degree provided that security while he pursued his goal. His story shows how a backup plan can offer another route forward without requiring someone to abandon their ambition.
