Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya (University) Chapra is one of the premier and largest universities of Bihar. It was established on 22.11.90 by the enactment of Section 3(b) of Bihar State Universities Act, 1976 with its Head Quarters at Chapra. It was carved out from the then, Bihar University (now B.R.A. Bihar University) Muzaffarpur. It was established by the Government of Bihar in response to the growing needs and long standing expectations of the people of Saran commissionary. It was formally inaugurated in November 1992 by Chief Minister Sri Lalu Prasad. The university Is named in memory of the great freedom fighter Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is stretched over the whole of Saran Division Comprising three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj. The Colleges situated in these districts were automatically transferred to Jai Prakash University, Chapra. There are altogether 21 constitute Colleges, 2 affiliated deficit Grant Colleges (including one minority college) and 10 affiliated Colleges. All the Constituent Colleges are registered with the U.G.C. under Section 12(f) of the U.G.C. Act and are getting U.G.C. grants. There are altogether Sixteen P.G. Departments. The University offers courses at the Under Graduate level and Post Graduate level in most subjects. The 242 acres of land on the eastern side of Chapra town for developing the campus of the University has been acquired. The campus is being developed according to the Master Plan prepared by internationally acclaimed town planners

Distance Education - The university provides distance education to all by offering high quality innovative and need-based programmes at different levels, especially to the underprivileged segments of society at affordable costs. It also provides various Vocational Courses under Self-Financing Scheme.

Library - The Central library boasts of a variety of books and study material to support the student.

Sports - Sports Council of JaiPrakash Vishwavidyalaya conducts all the activities mentioned under the sports calendars of various colleges of the university. It constitutes of conduction of inter college sports competition and participation of qualified teams in inter university sports meets.

Extra-Curricular Activities - The Cultural Council of Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya conducts various extra-curricular activities across different colleges of the university. It organises debates, speech competitions, essay-writing competitions, drawing competitions, dance competitions, music competitions, etc. along with singing,and stage dramas & plays.
