IIT Ropar is a new bird in the flock of IITs; it is amongst the 8 new IITs which became functional in 2008 or 2009. It was set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to enhance the quality of technical education in the country. This institute is committed towards the state-of-the-art technology in the country and transmission of knowledge. The Institute started functioning from its transit campus in Rupnagar in August 2009. The infrastructure is being developed and construction is in full swing. Among all the IIT's in the country last year IIT Ropar was ranked #8.
IIT Delhi is the mentor institute for IIT Ropar. As of now there are three bachelor level degrees that are offered and seven PhD courses.The list of courses is:

IIT Ropar is spread over an area of 500 acres. The academic block has 12 lecture halls, modern classrooms equipped with latest technological teaching aids, two computer labs with 96 workstations. The campus has hostel facilities for the students enrolled in IIT Ropar. Currently there are two hostels for boys and one for girls with hygienic and clean dining halls and catering facilities.
