About Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute
Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute or Dr MGR Deemed University in its prevalent avatar, is a multi-discipline education institute. It was not known with its prevalent name earlier. Tracing back its history we find that a charity named Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust was established in the year 1985. The trust founded by A.C. Shanmugam under the Kannamal Educational Trust established Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College in 1988 and in 1991 it established the Thai Moogambigai Dental College. By 2003 both the colleges acquired Deemed University (estd. U/s 3 of UGC Act 1956) status when they were merged into a university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission. But the earlier title still carries on as the institute is also known as Dr MGR Educational Research Institute University.
Dr MGR University, Maduravoyal is named after an illustrious south film actor, director, producer and politician. He became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for three successive terms and did a great deal for the people.
The campus is spread over 300 acres of land, with a built-up area of over 1.1 million square feet
The university has two campuses:
Dr MGR University has a name which can be confused with Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR University. The difference can be observed from the titles but sometimes we tend to refer them in short and that is where the confusion can arise. To add to it both are also located in Madras. To clear the confusion the latter is a medical university and the rest can be seen from the addresses contained in profiles of both on our portal.

Hostel – The university provides hostel facilities which is capable of accommodating more than 1500 students both Male and Female. It is located at Ambattur Main Road making it easily accessible to the metropolitan transport services.
Library – Dr MGR Deemed University has no shortage of information resources rather it has it in abundance with a central library, department libraries as well as a digital library. The library subscribes to a number of daily newspapers in English, Tamil and Hindi. The library also offers internet facility, library automation and digital library. The Library is equipped with latest state of "3M" SECURITY systems. Library can be accessed by both Part time, Full time students and also by university staff. The institutes’ E-Library has a collection of more than 1,00,000 books, thousands of journals both national and international, weekly and monthly magazines. E-Library is available 24hrs a day and 7days a week.
Wi-Fi- Dr. MGR University, campus is a 24-hour Wi-Fi enabled campus and the electronic and computer laboratories have the latest computers and best technological facilities.
Banking Services – The university campus houses a Canara Bank Branch which offers banking services to the students and staff during the college working hours. The bank also extends ATM facility which can be accessed 24 hours a day. There is also ICICI ATM facility at the medical college campus.
Transport – The university offers many air-conditioned buses, ultra-deluxe buses, deluxe buses and mini buses which are operated in and around Chennai city catering to the students and staff. The institute’s Mobile Dental Van provides medical services to the rural areas.
Research – Research is facilitated with 64 laboratories which are well-equipped and furnished with all necessary equipments. Various research activities are conducted by the institute. The university has university research staff numbering 73, 262 external supervisors and 300 Ph. D research students, research officers and assistants. A few candidates are also pursuing MS program.
Placements and Training Cell – The cell is responsible for conducting various training programmes meant to make them the prefect employee.

The university students have been placed with well-known companies like Accenture, BPCL, CPCL, Godrej, IBM, NCTPC, Polaris, TCS etc. About 75% of the students are placed through the campus interviews.
Conference & Seminar Halls - The Convention Centre at A.C.S. Medical College and Hospital is one of the largest convention centres in Chennai city. It is fully air conditioned and can accommodate more than 9000 inmates. It is used for various activities such as annual days, convocation, inter-college cultural programmes and other major events.
MOU’s - The University has entered in MOU with the following International Universities.
International Journal – The International Journal from Department CSE & MCA (ACS-IJCI) acts to bridge the research community and technology developers from academia and industry. ACS-IJCI stands for Advance Computing Science International Journal of Computational Intelligence. It provides a forum for scientists, researchers, engineers and academicians to share their innovative ideas and research in the field of computer engineering and software technology.
NSS - National Service Scheme (NSS) promotes social consciousness and offers opportunities to students for developing awareness and knowledge of social realities. It makes them a socially responsible citizen through community social work meant to mitigate social problems.
Alumni Association – The association narrows the gap between the former students and the institute. Dr. M.G.R. Alumni has made significant contribution in various fields like entrepreneurship, education, research, social development and corporate careers.
