India presents a striking paradox in the global competition for graduate talent: international graduates who study in the country often return to their home countries, while Indian-origin graduates who pursue higher education overseas are more likely to remain abroad.
According to the Talent Beyond Borders report by Studyportals and Cambridge IELTS, 47 per cent of international graduates who studied in India returned to their countries of origin. In contrast, 63 per cent of Indian-origin graduates who studied overseas were classified as โStayersโ in the study.
The findings highlight India's contrasting position in the global talent landscape โ as a destination whose international graduates often leave, and as a source of talent that other countries may retain.
The competition to attract and retain international graduates carries significant economic implications. International students who graduated worldwide in 2024 are projected to contribute approximately $1.7 trillion to their host economies over their working lives, according to the report. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are expected to account for around $1 trillion of this contribution.
Graduate retention rates vary across destinations. Canada leads among the countries covered in the study, with 66 per cent of international graduates remaining in the country. Australia follows at 53 per cent, Germany at 49 per cent, Ireland at 45 per cent and the United States at 44 per cent.
These figures underline how international education extends beyond tuition revenue. For host countries, international graduates can become a source of skilled labour, innovation and long-term economic growth. Retaining these graduates can therefore be an important part of national talent strategies.
For India, the findings raise two distinct questions: how to attract and retain international graduates who study in the country, and how to strengthen the domestic opportunities available to Indian graduates who pursue higher education overseas.

Access to specialised jobs, competitive salaries, research infrastructure and career advancement opportunities can influence where graduates choose to build their futures. Strengthening these areas could help India become a more attractive destination for international talent while improving its ability to retain skilled professionals.
The movement of talent, however, does not necessarily represent a one-way loss for India. Indian graduates who return after studying overseas can bring specialised expertise, international networks and exposure to advanced research and industry practices. Those who remain abroad may also contribute through cross-border research, business partnerships, investment and knowledge exchange.
As countries intensify their competition for graduate talent, India's ability to turn international education and overseas expertise into sustained economic and intellectual gains will become increasingly significant.
