The Delhi Governmentโs announcement to construct hostels for 10,000 students, made two days before voting in the Delhi University Studentsโ Union (DUSU) elections, has triggered a political exchange between the National Studentsโ Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
While NSUI has questioned the timing of the announcement and sought more details about the proposed hostels, ABVP has accused the Congress-affiliated student organisation of politicising the issue of student accommodation.
The issue has now become part of the conversation around the DUSU elections, with both groups putting forward different views on the governmentโs announcement.
NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar questioned why the Delhi Government had not acted earlier to address the shortage of safe and affordable accommodation for students.
Referring to concerns over student housing and the Satya Niketan building collapse, Jakhar asked why the government had not acted when students were struggling with accommodation.
He also sought clarity on where the proposed hostels would be built, the implementation timeline, budget allocation, fee structure and eligibility criteria.
Jakhar questioned the decision to announce the project just two days before DUSU voting and asked whether the move was solely about student accommodation or could influence students ahead of the election.
NSUI said it was not opposing the proposed hostels, but was questioning their timing, transparency and implementation.
ABVP Delhi state secretary Sarthak Sharma accused NSUI of taking a contradictory position on the hostel issue.

Sharma said NSUI had earlier highlighted the shortage of hostels as a major student concern but was now questioning the governmentโs move to address the demand.
He also referred to NSUIโs response during the Satya Niketan tragedy and accused Congress-NSUI of repeatedly politicising student issues.
Sharma questioned whether NSUI wanted a solution to studentsโ accommodation problems or wanted to keep the issue alive for political purposes.
He also raised questions about the Congressโ record in Delhi and asked what steps had been taken during its periods in office to expand hostel facilities.
ABVP reiterated its demand for increased hostel capacity and safe, affordable and accessible accommodation for students.
The exchange comes just ahead of the DUSU elections, with student accommodation emerging as an issue being debated by the rival organisations.
NSUI has focused on the timing and transparency of the announcement, while ABVP has stressed the need to address the shortage of hostel facilities.
The proposed hostels for 10,000 students are now part of the discussion as students prepare to vote.
