One photograph, a red student union flag and a young woman running as police move in to detain protesters -- Puzhakkal Pavithra was not a household name until that moment in Delhi turned her into the face of a protest.
A student at Delhi University's Hansraj College, Pavithra has drawn attention not just for the photograph but also for her association with the Students' Federation of India (SFI), her roots in Kerala and her family's reported links to Left politics.
Here is what is known about the student whose photograph has travelled far beyond the protest site.
Pavithra is a 20-year-old undergraduate student from Palakkad district in Kerala. She is in her third year of studying Anthropology at Hansraj College and has been associated with SFI for around two years, according to The Indian Express.
She came into the spotlight during events surrounding an SFI-organised Tiranga Women Rally in Delhi. The rally was scheduled for October 11, but police began detaining protesters before it could get underway.
Pavithra was among those detained. A photograph of her running with an SFI flag became widely circulated, turning an otherwise ordinary student activist into a recognisable face of the protest.
Speaking to The Indian Express, she explained that protesters started running after hearing police personnel call for women officers. She said she had not even realised she was still holding the flag as she ran.
Her response to the police action was equally direct. She argued that protesting was a fundamental right and that it was time to work towards changing the system.
The photograph captured a split-second moment. The story behind it, however, involves a student who has chosen to participate in campus politics.
Interest in Pavithra has also extended to her family background.
According to The Indian Express, her mother is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), in Palakkad. The report also identifies her grandfather, KV Chandran, as a Communist leader who formerly served as sarpanch of Mankara.
A separate report by Onmanorama identifies Pavithra as the daughter of KC Bindu, an accountant at Mankara Co-operative Bank, and the late Prakashan.
Pavithra's reported family connections do not, by themselves, explain her reasons for joining student activism.
The Students' Federation of India is a Left-affiliated student organisation associated with the CPI(M). Pavithra's association with SFI places her within this broader student political movement. But it is the photograph, rather than a formal political position or a long public career, that has brought her into the national conversation.
