PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday criticised the Tamil Nadu government for not publishing the results of the special Teacher Eligibility Test even a year after the Supreme Courtโs verdict on the issue. He expressed concern over the livelihoods of 3.28 lakh teachers and asked the government to immediately release the results and reduce the pass mark for reserved categories.
In a statement, Ramadoss said the delay had affected thousands of teachers who need to clear the test to keep their jobs. He also urged the state to hold more exams before the deadline set by the court so that teachers do not lose attempts because of administrative delays.
Recalling the September 1 Supreme Court order last year, he said all secondary and graduate teachers appointed before the Right to Education Act, 2010, came into force must pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) within three years, by August 31, 2027, or face termination. He said the deadline was later extended to August 31, 2028, and teachers with less than five years left for retirement were exempted. Even so, Ramadoss claimed that 3,28,701 teachers in Tamil Nadu still have to clear the exam to retain their jobs.
He said that despite his demand for simplified special exams soon after the apex court verdict, the government announced the exam only six months later, on February 13 this year. โWhile the special TET was eventually conducted on July 4 and 5, the results remain unreleased even after 230 days since the notification and nearly 90 days after the examination,โ he said.
Ramadoss blamed the delay on administrative apathy. He said that when a petition seeking a cut in the pass mark was heard in the Madras High Court on July 8, the government sought time to respond, which led to an interim stay on the publication of the results. He added, โAlthough the High Court directed the government to clarify its stance by July 24, the state filed its counter-affidavit a month late, on August 25,โ and said the government had still not moved quickly to get the stay lifted and declare the results.
He said that of the 36-month period granted by the Supreme Court, 13 months had already passed without a single result being published. Accusing the government of โrobbing teachers of their rightful opportunitiesโ, he said it had also failed to conduct the exams twice a year as originally required. He warned that if the slow pace continues, teachers could lose three to four attempts, leading to โirreparable social injusticeโ.
The PMK leader also asked the government to use its discretionary powers to reduce the qualifying mark for reserved categories to 35 per cent, or 52 out of 150 marks. He said such a move would have enabled nearly 90 per cent of the 2,20,464 teachers who took the July exam to pass. Questioning why the government, which had earlier passed an Assembly resolution seeking amendments to the RTE Act, was hesitant to issue an executive order on the pass mark, Ramadoss urged it to publish the results under relaxed criteria and hold five more TETs before August 2028 to ease the mental agony of teachers.
In sum, Ramadoss said the delay in releasing the special TET results and in taking a decision on relaxed pass marks was hurting thousands of teachers, and he called on the Tamil Nadu government to act immediately.
