For candidates who appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) and are considering a career in healthcare, MBBS and BDS are two prominent undergraduate options.
MBBS and BDS involve clinical training and patient care, but they differ in their areas of study, professional roles and the type of healthcare practice they prepare students for.
Both MBBS and BDS are professional healthcare degrees and involve extensive scientific and clinical education. Students who are interested in patient care may therefore consider both options while making their choices after NEET.
However, the scope of clinical education differs. MBBS focuses on the human body and a wide range of diseases and medical conditions, while BDS concentrates specifically on oral and dental health.
The duration also differs slightly. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), MBBS consists of 4.5 years of academic study followed by one year of compulsory rotating medical internship.
BDS regulations prescribe four years of undergraduate study followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship.
MBBS students study foundational subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology before moving into clinical subjects including medicine and surgery.
The course involves exposure to different areas of healthcare and clinical settings. The NMC curriculum includes practical and clinical experiences alongside classroom learning.
BDS students study subjects related to the teeth, mouth and surrounding structures. Their education includes areas such as dental anatomy, oral pathology, oral medicine, dental materials and oral surgery, along with clinical dental training.
The BDS internship is designed to provide hands-on training across areas of dental care and professional practice.
An MBBS degree can lead to medical practice after completing the required internship and registration requirements. Students can also pursue postgraduate medical education and specialise in areas such as medicine, surgery, paediatrics, dermatology, radiology and other disciplines.
BDS graduates can pursue dental practice and can further specialise through postgraduate dental education. Dental careers can include clinical dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics and other areas.
The nature of clinical work is therefore one of the key differences students should consider.
MBBS may be relevant for students interested in diagnosing and managing a broad range of medical conditions and exploring different medical specialities.
BDS may be relevant for students whose primary interest is oral healthcare, dental procedures and the diagnosis and treatment of dental conditions.
Neither course is universally better. Students should consider their interests, aptitude for biological sciences, preferred area of patient care and long-term career plans before making a decision.
The choice should also be based on the specific college, curriculum, clinical exposure, internship structure and postgraduate opportunities available to students.
