The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed strong displeasure over alleged incidents of violence and hooliganism during the Delhi University Studentsโ Union (DUSU) election campaign in North Campus.
The court sought reports from Delhi University, the Delhi Police and the government by Friday on the incidents and the action taken in connection with them.
The court warned that if it was not satisfied with the action taken to prevent such incidents from being repeated, it could stay the counting of votes and declaration of the election results.
The court remarked, โDemocracy cannot be turned into a criminal society.โ
The court also cautioned that it could even consider abandoning the DUSU elections altogether if it was not satisfied that such conduct would not be repeated.
The court's remarks came amid allegations of violence and violations of its earlier directions during campaigning in Delhi University's North Campus.
The DUSU contest features four-member panels from both ABVP and NSUI.
The ABVP panel comprises Yash Dabas, Ishu Maurya, Riya Chhawadi and Lakshya Raj Singh. Dabas is pursuing Buddhist Studies at DU and has an international-level tennis background, while Maurya is pursuing law at Campus Law Centre. Chhawadi is a BA student at Sri Aurobindo College and Singh is pursuing law after graduating in Political Science.
The NSUI panel comprises Vijay Shankar Meena, Veer Chhatrath, Namrata Choudhary and Gopal Choudhary. Meena, Chhatrath and Choudhary are pursuing MA in Buddhist Studies at DU, while Namrata Choudhary is pursuing her second-year MA in Buddhist Studies.
