Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla is commonly known as IG Medical College or IGMC Shimla. The college is one of the premier institutions, imparting medical education since 1966.The college was initially named as Himachal Pradesh Medical College (HPMC) and was renamed in 1984. The courses offered by Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla are recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).The college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University. The college offers medical education at various levels.
Over the years, Indira Gandhi Medical College is expanding itself in terms of its infrastructure, facilities provided, courses offered and the number of students enrolled in various courses. In 2005, the college started the facility of open heart surgery. In 2006, MRI facility was started by IGMC. Government of India has given Indira Gandhi Medical College the status of a reputed regional center for treating cancer patients.
To offer better facilities, Indira Gandhi Medical College has collaborated with many institutions, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for Open Heart Surgical Operations, Post Graduate Institute (PGI) for teaching and Research Activities, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for District Cancer Project and Directorate Health Services for Cancer project. In addition to this, the college has coordinated with Revised National Tuberculosis Programme (RNTCP) and World Health Organization (WHO) as well
