Physical science majors are well-prepared to tackle society's most unanswered riddles. Chemists study the chemical composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, particularly atomic and molecular systems.

Geoscientists use their understanding of the Earth's physical makeup and history to find water, mineral, and energy resources, preserve the environment, forecast future geologic hazards, and provide guidance on construction and land-use projects. Physicists study and discover the fundamental laws that regulate the form and behaviour of matter, as well as the interplay of matter and energy—in other words, Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Geosciences cover a wide range of topics. Major geoscience fields include geology, palaeontology, geochemistry, mineralogy, geophysics, hydrology, oceanography, marine science, atmospheric science, planetary science, meteorology, environmental science, and soil science.

Anyone interested in a career in geology should have strong mathematical abilities, problem-solving and analytical skills, and a strong sense of curiosity. For aspiring environmental scientists and geoscientists, computer abilities are required. Experience with computer modelling, data analysis and integration, digital mapping, remote sensing, and geographic information systems should be sought by students (GIS). Because some employers prefer candidates with field expertise, geoscience students can benefit greatly from a summer internship or undergraduate research experience.

Prospective geoscientists who want to work in the industry should take courses in economics, computer technology, and business management to flesh out their degree. Many geologists operate as part of a team, publish research articles or proposals, and interact with non-science clients or consumers.
